Eat organic on a budget


Q: I have arthritis and am trying to eat healthy but have a steady income, so organic products are too expensive for me to buy regularly. Can you advise me, please?

A: Good news first … you don’t have to buy organic food to eat healthily! The organic seal refers to agricultural standards and has nothing to do with nutrition or health. That being said, we have our Ingles brand of organic produce known as Harvest Farms, which may be more affordable.

Dietary recommendations for arthritis and inflammation in general often correspond to the so-called Mediterranean diet:

  • Daily: Eat fruits and vegetables (including beans), nuts, and seeds
  • At least 2-3 times a week for anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids Make sure you eat seafood. this can be in any form – fresh, frozen or Cans.
  • Avoid foods and drinks that are high in salt or sugar, avoid fried foods and Limit fatty meats, caffeinated drinks and alcohol.
  • Engage in activities and exercise as your doctor tells you to do.
