Science says the fatty acids in omega-3 supplements can stabilize memories in Alzheimer’s patients


It has long been proven that the fatty acids found in fish protect our brains as we age. New findings published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease further support this theory; The study found that omega-3 fatty acids can ultimately help preserve and stabilize our memories, even if they are partially compromised. The team reached this conclusion by giving Alzheimer’s patients omega-3 supplements on a daily basis, whose memory tests remained constant over long periods of time compared to those who did not take these pills.

A team of scientists from the Karolinska Institute, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and Uppsala University looked at 33 people who had mild to moderate symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease: 18 took omega-3 supplements while the other 15 (the control group) did didn’t do. The researchers examined samples of the volunteers’ spinal cord fluids, including biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease; The team also performed memory tests at the start of the study and after six months. The result? The test group’s memory tests all remained constant.

“We see that the memory function of the patients in the group who took omega-3 is stable, while the patients in the control group have deteriorated. The memory tests show that, ”said Yvonne Freund-Levi, a neuroscience researcher at Örebro University, in a press release. “But we can’t see any differences between the groups when we look at the different biomarkers in the spinal fluid samples.”

Freund-Levi noted that more research is needed: “Even if we do not currently have enough data to change our recommendations to patients, it is an interesting material for researchers to build on.” If anything, the teams involved hope that this will stimulate ideas for a pretreatment model so that doctors can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in their patients. “We are careful with recommendations, but we know that starting early is by far the best – it is difficult to influence the disease at a later point in time,” adds Freund-Levi. “The best advice we can give right now is to be physically active and include omega-3s in your diet, in the form of oily fish or supplements. We can see a difference in the results of the memory tests. Patients who took omega-3 supplements early in the disease did better. “
