An original study on Alzheimer’s disease looked at the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on memory and cerebrospinal fluid tests.
“This study is unique. This is the first time we have collected data on these new biomarkers in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Disease processed with omega-3 fatty acids (FFA), ”says Yvonne Freundrevi, who has worked with researchers from the Karolinska Institute, Saar Glenska University Hospital and Uppsala University.
She notes that this is a small study – it included 33 patients, 18 of whom were given omega-3 supplements in the morning and evening, and 15 of whom were the control test, both at the start of the study and after 6 months .
“While the memory function of the patients in the omega-3 group was stable, the control group deteriorated. This is the memory test of the show, ”says Yvonne Freundrevi.
“But if we look at the different biomarkers in the CSF samples, we cannot tell the difference between the groups.”
What the researchers can see, however, is that there are differences within the omega-3 group. Two markers associated with damaged nerve cells rose. However, it has no clinical relevance for memory testing.
“This data is currently insufficient to change patient recommendations, but it is an interesting resource for researchers.”
The study is based on a large study that was started 15 years ago by Yvonne Freund-Levi and her research team on more than 200 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. In this study, among other things, researchers looked at whether omega-3 fatty acids were transferred to the brain from dietary supplements and concluded that this was the case.
“We’re careful about recommendations, but we know it’s definitely best to start early. It is difficult to influence the disease later. We need to deploy it at this point. The best advice that you shouldn’t have is to be physically active. Include omega 3 in your diet, either in the form of oily fish or as a supplement. There are differences in the results. Memory test. Patients who took omega-3 supplements in the early stages of their disease scored higher, ”said Freundrevi, a neuroscientist at Örebro University.
A big step forward is that researchers will in future be able to examine biomarkers in blood samples without patients having to perform a spinal puncture.
“We have already tested this approach at the Saar Glenska University Hospital. It is undoubtedly very good for the patients. ”
