Regular consumption of fish and fish oil supplements has long been considered an easy way to reduce your risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease. For those who don’t necessarily have the time or incentive to prepare seafood on a regular basis, supplementing with fish oil can make a healthier lifestyle much easier. However, experts say that taking fish oil supplements can have some surprising health benefits – especially one that you may never have heard of.
According to registered nutritionist Holly Klamer, MS, RD, from My Crohns and Colitis Team, Taking fish oil supplements can be an effective way to reduce psoriasis symptoms.
“A 2020 study found that fish oil supplements in combination with conventional treatments helped eliminate psoriasis in the study participants,” says Klamer. “The reason fish oil supplements can help with psoriasis is because of their anti-inflammatory properties.” (Related: The # 1 Best Dietary Supplement for Reducing Inflammation, Say Dietitians.)

Another study published in Open Access Text came to similar conclusions. In the latter study, the researchers divided 40 patients with plaque psoriasis into two groups, with one group receiving 3 grams of fish oil per day and a control group. The study’s authors found that those who took fish oil supplements improved their quality of life, their antioxidant levels were higher, and their overall inflammation was reduced.
While fish oil supplements may have benefits for some people with psoriasis, it’s not a panacea for anyone suffering from this or any other skin condition, experts warn.
“Some people, especially those who are allergic to fish or shellfish, may develop a rash or dermatitis associated with fish oil. This is because fish oil can contain a small number of proteins that can cause allergic reactions in people, ”explains Heidi Monetti, RD, Resident Nutritionist at Sovereign Laboratories.

As with any supplement or medication, it is always best to make sure that your fish oil does not interact with other recipes or OTC medications that you are taking. So speak to your doctor before buying a bottle, even if it looks like a magic bullet for your psoriasis now.
