Purina selects Ahiflower’s vegetable omega-3 oil as a nutritional supplement for horses

Purina Animal Nutrition has selected Ahiflower, a plant-based omega-3 oil ingredient, for its equine nutritional supplements. Ahiflower is a proprietary ingredient of Natures Crops International. The Purina supplement that contains Ahiflower is the Purina OmegaMatch Ahiflower Oil Supplement.

The Purina product website states, “Ahiflower oil contains more omegas than other vegetable oils commonly fed to horses. The unique fatty acid offers benefits associated with fish oil, evening primrose oil, olive oil and flaxseed oil. “

Natures Crops says Ahiflower has “the richest combined levels of omega-3 stearidonic acid (SDA) and omega-6 gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and a total of 85% polyunsaturated fatty acids”. The company states that Purina’s published research on horses has found that Ahiflower Oil has high palatability “and the ability to better match the omega nutritional effects of pasture grasses in horses.” The supplier says: “They quickly realized that this would fill an important gap for horses that do not have regular access to fresh pasture, hence the name ‘OmegaMatch’.”

Andrew Hebard, CEO of Natures Crops, stated in a press release: “We believe that Ahiflower Oil is the most complete and balanced ‘multi-omega’ from a regenerative plant source.”
