Hangover is often associated with alcohol consumption, so Sian Baker, Head of Wellbeing Services and registered nutrition therapist with health and wellness testing company Check My Body Health has compiled a list of the 7 most important foods you can consume to help you overcome your hangover.

She said, “As people can now go to pubs outside, we can expect our alcohol consumption to increase as social gatherings with friends and family, who we may not have seen for a while, become more frequent.

“After periods of heavy drinking, people can often experience hangover symptoms like dehydration, nausea, headaches, and insomnia – even if you’ve had a great time off, those symptoms are never nice!

“Staying hydrated is the most important way to avoid an uncomfortable hangover, so try to take a water break between each alcoholic drink.

“However, the foods listed above can also take the spice out and make sure you’re energizing your body and giving it the best possible chance to recover.”

If you are expecting a heavy drinking session, you can line your stomach with dairy products like milk or yogurt to reduce the effects of consumed alcohol.


While technically not a food, making sure you are adequately hydrated will help alleviate the effects of the hangover.

If possible, try adding a little sugar and salt to your water to make your own rehydration drink, replacing not only the lost water but also the sugar and essential salts.


Proteins and fats, like the healthy oils in fish, stay in the stomach longer, so they’re another great food to eat before you drink them.

Taking omega-3 and omega-6 capsules both before and after drinking also helps cover the stomach and replenish your fatty acid levels the next morning.


Magnesium is a nutrient that is often depleted during a drinking session, so foods rich in magnesium like spinach will help replenish your magnesium levels.

Spinach also has anti-inflammatory properties, so it makes a great starting point for a meal that will help you overcome your hangover – try adding it to a morning smoothie, as part of a lighter breakfast, or even as a salad for lunch.


Drinking alcohol can lead to electrolyte imbalances by increasing fluid loss and electrolyte excretion. So when you rebalance your electrolyte levels, you can recover.

Bananas contain good amounts of potassium so you can raise your levels after a long night of drinking. If you don’t like bananas too much, avocados and other foods high in potassium will help too.


Nausea is a very common hangover symptom, and it’s definitely not fun fighting your way through. However, pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which makes digestion easier and reduces pressure on the liver.


Eating a little ginger is another great way to relieve nausea.

Ginger can reduce inflammation and help calm your stomach. So why not try adding it to a fresh smoothie with some nutritious fruits and vegetables to help rebalance your vitamins and minerals.
