There is a lot of confusion about what to eat healthily. A long list of these foods has gone in and out of style – including milk and eggs, and fat and nuts.

Sally Squires, who writes the Lean Plate Club blog, told WTOP that a group of scientists have released new knowledge about the healthiest foods.

“Some of them will look familiar, but some of them came as quite a surprise to me,” said Squires.

Number 5 on the list is chia seeds.

“And yes, these are exactly the seeds we probably had in our chia pets a few decades ago,” she said. “And the Harvard School of Public Health is just one of the groups they call superfoods.”

Knappen added that it’s because they contain healthy fat.

“In fact, they have the healthiest omega-3s of any plant source,” she said.

According to Squires, research shows that they can help lower blood cholesterol, improve heart health, slow digestion, and you can stir chia seeds into smoothies or salads, marinades, cake batter, soups, and so on.

Places # 4 and # 3 went to flatfish, such as flounder and sole, then perch.

“That’s because fish is full of protein. It is low in unhealthy fats and contains these great omega-3 fatty acids. And we know that omega-3s help improve heart health, and they can also improve mood and joint health, ”said Squires.

One of the surprises on the list? Cherimoya – also known as custard.

Knappen said it was a fruit believed to have originated in South America, in the Andes.

“It’s high in antioxidants and vitamin B6,” she said. “The only thing you need to know about it is that you want to get rid of the skin and seeds as they contain some toxic compounds. So you only want to eat the middle and it should be very creamy. “

According to these scientists, the healthiest food one can eat right now? Almonds.

“Almonds are rich in healthy fats. They also contain calcium, which supports bone health, and they lower blood cholesterol levels. Recent studies show that they can help improve heart health and people with type 2 diabetes. They also contain fiber and many other nutrients like protein, vitamin D, magnesium and manganese, ”said Squires.

One word of caution when it comes to almonds: they’re high in calories – around 160 calories per ounce, according to Squires.

“So you don’t want to eat a handful after a handful, but a good handful is about 160 calories and just has a lot of really great nutrients,” said Squires.
