Best Diet Supplements For Men: Omega-3s May Improve Sperm Counts and Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease

Dietary supplements are essential in this day and age, especially in our fast paced lifestyles where we are constantly overworked, too little sleep, too much exercise and recovery, on top of poor stress management and eating habits, and perhaps even a sedentary lifestyle. Dietary supplements have a major impact on health, as vitamin and mineral deficiencies can lead to health problems. In men, these can be prostate problems and low testosterone levels, or even poor heart health. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements are recommended for overall men’s health improvement.

Omega-3 is an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body and affects the function of cell receptors in these membranes.

They form the starting point for the production of hormones that regulate blood clotting, the contraction and relaxation of arterial walls, and inflammation.

They also bind to receptors in cells that regulate genetic function. Probably because of these effects, omega-3s have been shown to help prevent heart disease and stroke, control lupus, eczema and rheumatoid arthritis, and can play a protective role in cancer and other diseases.

Omega-3 supplements are also very beneficial for testicular health.

A study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health looked at the relationship between taking fish oil supplements and testicular function in young men.

The study states: “Many young men have poor semen quality and the causes are often unknown.

“Ingesting omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids has been found to improve semen quality in men with infertility.

“This cross-sectional study included young Danish men from the general population who were recruited between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2017 for compulsory medical examinations to determine their fitness for military service.

“Young, unselected men were approached after the investigation and invited to take part in a study on reproductive function, regardless of their fitness for military service.

“Of the 1,679 young Danish men recruited to participate, 98 men said they had used fish oil supplements in the past three months, of which 53 reported use for 60 days or more.

“After adjustment and compared to men who did not take supplements, men who took fish oil supplements had higher semen volume for less than 60 days and men who took fish oil supplements for 60 days or more had higher semen volume.

“Similarly, the testicle size was larger in men who took supplements for less than 60 days, and larger in men who took fish oil supplement for 60 days or more than men who did not.

“After the adjustment, men taking fish oil supplements had 20 percent lower levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and 16 percent lower levels of luteinizing hormone compared to men who were not taking supplements.”

Much scientific evidence suggests that the “good fats” in salmon, nuts, and chia seeds are absolutely essential to the healthy functioning of your body – especially for active men, said Kylene Bogden, a sports dieter at the Center for Functional Medicine.

He continued, “Omega-3s can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, which then leads to less muscle soreness after exercise.

“It is particularly effective for endurance athletes who get more oxidative stress from their long-distance training. If you’re an endurance athlete, you should probably be taking an omega-3 supplement – getting what you need from nuts, seeds, and oily fish can be a little difficult. “

As with most dietary supplements, it is highly recommended that you consult your family doctor before taking them.
