“Our study suggests that fish oil supplements are associated with a significantly higher risk of atrial fibrillation in patients at increased cardiovascular risk,” said Dr. Salvatore Carbone from the Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at the College of Humanities & Sciences, Virginia Commonwealth University.

“Although a clinical study indicated beneficial cardiovascular effects of supplementation, the risk of atrial fibrillation should be considered when prescribing or buying such agents over the counter, especially in those prone to developing an arrhythmia,” he added.

The researchers concluded that their study indicates that fish oil supplements are linked to an increased risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with increased plasma triglyceride and increased cardiovascular risk, and suggest the risk of atrial fibrillation when prescribing omega-3 supplements -Fatty acids to take into account this group.
