You may already know that flaxseed is an easy way to add more fiber to your diet. It turns out that these nutritious seeds do more than just help keep you feeling full and smooth your digestion.They might even help you live longer. Flax seeds contain a wide variety of omega-3 fatty acids that can help fight off dangerous diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and even some cancers.
“Many people are surprised to learn that flaxseed is rich in a beneficial form of omega-3s. Fish has two forms of omega-3s – EPA and DHA. Flaxseed has a different form known as ALA,” Samantha Cassetty, MS, RD. The nutrition and wellness expert and co-author of Sugar Shock told Eat This, Not That !. “ALA is an essential nutrient because we can’t make it on our own. Two tablespoons of ground flaxseed provides … 2.8 grams of omega-3 fatty acids.”

Compare that to the 1.5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids in a 3-ounce serving of wild salmon. Casetty noted that when your body isn’t getting the omega-3 fatty acids it needs, “it can promote low-grade chronic inflammation, which is linked to numerous health problems, including autoimmune inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, and mood disorders.”
Victoria Goodman, DSC, RDN, LDN and CLT added that the anti-inflammatory effects of semen may also help fight off “certain cancers … and diabetes”.
To maximize the health benefits of the seeds and for a comfortable eating experience, you should probably add it to your diet in the form of ground flaxseed flour as it is difficult for our bodies to digest the seeds as a whole.
“The seeds are tough enough that the seeds can be passed through the system intact. This provides insoluble fiber, which is nice, but … ground flax flour contains the soluble fiber that helps lower cholesterol,” says Sarah Krieger, MPH. RDN.
